COURSE A

COURSE A

In the Hovland system of learning, students learn from videos at home to prepare for one-on-one lessons with their teacher. The Conservatory Course is suitable for any age student, and assignments are paced depending on age. Kindergarten age students should play along with videos 1-2 before their first one-on-one lesson. Students in grades 1 and 2 should play videos 1-5. Grades 3 and 4 should play videos 1-8. - Grades 5 and older should play videos 1-11.

HOW TO USE THE LESSON LIST
Look at the Lesson List section of Course A. From the list, click your Assignment number and play along, On the video you will SEE the music on the screen, HEAR audio explanations, and COPY video demonstrations. When Assignment 1 is easy and familiar, play Assignment 2. You will discover that with just a little time, even the youngest student will be able to use the videos without help and they will become a fun part of their day. The videos are taught by Mary Hovland, author of The Conservatory Course. The demonstrations in the videos are played slowly so students can follow along and observe the details for learning each piece. Students should think of the videos as a game where they try to match what they are observing in the video.

HOW TO USE THE PLAY LIST
"Pattern 1, Pattern 2, and Passage" videos on the Lesson List are excerpts from songs in the Playlist. Once you have finished the Passage, your teacher will assign the whole song from the Playlist. Play along with the assigned Playlist videos at home in Slow Time. Next, play at your Own Time until the song becomes easy. Finally, enjoy playing along at Real Time.

HOW TO USE THE THEORY HOMEWORK
Listen to the theory homework that corresponds with the Lesson List assignment. The theory homework explains and gives an answer key to the theory worksheets in your Course Book. You should do all the theory homework worksheets in your Course Book, but a minimum of four are required to advance to Course B. Your teacher will check if they are finished at your lesson.
